  11. [00:33:42] <azula369> Will anyone help?
  12. [00:35:33] <phdeswer> azula369, try the smaller board test image
  13. [00:36:13] <azula369> Which one is the smaller one? What's it called?
  14. [00:38:55] <phdeswer> azula369, http://www.omappedia.com/wiki/Minimal-FS
  15. [00:39:03] <phdeswer> This also checks if your board is good
  16. [00:39:20] <azula369> OK, I'll try that.
  17. [00:39:21] * phdeswer always found the ubuntu stuff a bit unpredictable.
  18. [00:40:26] <azula369> I was hoping to get Ubuntu because I'm (obviously) a bit inexperienced and thought I would be a bit adrift without any sort of GUI. I'll test that one and get back to you.
  19. [00:41:19] <phdeswer> azula369, the sd card setup fo Ubuntu seems to go wrong more often than smaller images for people.
  20. [00:43:01] * gandhijee_ (~akp@ip67-152-11-162.z11-152-67.customer.algx.net) has joined #pandaboard
  21. [00:43:07] <phdeswer> I never had issues, but then again I might have been doing this kind of stuff for way too long :)
  22. [00:44:47] <azula369> It says at the top of this page that the instructions are outdated. Should I just try them anyway?
  23. [00:44:49] <azula369> http://www.omappedia.com/wiki/Minimal-FS_SD_Configuration
  24. [00:45:53] <phdeswer> azula369, Ah had not seen that. No idea they were.
  25. [00:46:29] <phdeswer> Might just not work on the ES versions from what I can see
  26. [00:47:03] <azula369> OK, I'm following their instructions for configuring the SD card.
  27. [00:49:11] <phdeswer> azula369, in the end it all comes down to first a fat partition + kernel + uboot + config and MLO and a working rootfs as second parition/on a USB drive
  28. [00:49:42] <phdeswer> Anyway I need to go sleep...

  41. [02:05:32] <GPSFan> robclark, well, it is certainly better than 3.3-rc4 without any patches. there were a few more than just that one. It doesn't like my monitor, without patches, the dvi will read the edid & set to something my monitor will sync to, after patches. it reads the edid, but sets something that my monitor can't sync to (asus ) If you have the hdmi plugged in at bootup, bad things (tm) happen. I understand that this a WIP, so it's all ok. keep up the good woek. ;
  42. [02:05:32] <GPSFan> >)
  43. [02:06:47] <GPSFan> robclark, switching to hdmi does work, but it thinks either monitor is 800x600, time for zzzz more tomorrow

  162. [08:22:05] <Unreal_2004> Im here first time.
  163. [08:22:59] <erik__> I am trying to install ubuntu on a pandaboard. I have written the raw image file to sd-card. Ubuntu starts, resize the image and when it ties to boot after resize i get sector errors. I am using a brand new 32GB sd-card. Any suggestions?
  164. [08:23:01] <Unreal_2004> I search guy - who can make for my company handheld device like a mobile phone on Android 2.3
  165. [08:23:40] <Unreal_2004> hardware and software(core)
  166. [08:24:29] <LetoThe2nd> erik__: powered how? what power supply?
  167. [08:25:28] <LetoThe2nd> Unreal_2004: as you ask in an omap-oriented channel: check omappedia.org, there are a few announces of experts for hire.
  168. [08:25:29] <erik__> I use a power suply calibrated to 5v, i think it can deliver whats needed
  169. [08:25:42] <LetoThe2nd> erik__: don't think, provide numbers.
  170. [08:26:08] <Unreal_2004> thanks
  171. [08:26:51] <erik__> Well, it can deliver 3A at 7V.
  172. [08:28:06] <LetoThe2nd> erik__: but we need the numbers for 5V. if thats also 3A - ok. if it is less (which is very well possible). it *might* be a source of errors. i still recommend you check this.
  173. [08:28:29] <LetoThe2nd> erik__: besides - which pandabord and which ubuntu?
  174. [08:30:21] <erik__> I have tried ubuntu 11.10 and 11.04. I am not really sure which pandaboard i got. It sais 23-feb 2011 on the package. (I can't find any revision number either on the package or board)
  175. [08:32:59] <LetoThe2nd> erik__: ok. which guide did you follow?
  176. [08:35:56] <erik__> I have looked at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ARM/OmapNetbook but so far, i have just written the image to sd-card and booted up the device when the error starts to occur..

In time of writing, it already is a rather up to date choice, that supports also newer cores like the Cortex-M3, which I use for my projects. If you choose above versions, you make a save bet.

  789. [20:31:03] <jayabharath> tmax: Just build and run natively on the pandaboard?. similar to desktop (to the most part)

  811. [20:36:40] <LetoThe2nd> tmax: forget the sourcery chain, please. it won't automagically make things work for you which didn't with the ubuntu toolchain (which you said you sinstalled hours agio.)
  812. [20:37:03] <tmax> yeah
  813. [20:37:10] <LetoThe2nd> so why don't you use it?
  814. [20:37:20] <tmax> jayabharath: Code::Blocks page is www.codeblocks.org

  816. [20:37:57] <tmax> LetoThe2nd: cause i dont know how
  817. [20:38:22] <jayabharath> tmax: I dont think these will directly support what you are trying to do...
  818. [20:38:34] <LetoThe2nd> tmax: i cannot help you as long as you ask for eclipse, codeblocks, or whatever. that is just not relevant for using a toolcahin.
  819. [20:38:52] <LetoThe2nd> tmax: open a terminal, and fire up the compiler. its as easy as that!
  820. [20:38:58] <tmax> LetoThe2nd: i have a simple main.c whit a cout << "Hello world"; i dont have any idea how to compile using terminal
  821. [20:39:01] <jayabharath> the only IDE that I know has decent support for Pandaboard is ARM's DS-5
  822. [20:39:26] * luke_ (42d4d27a@gateway/web/freenode/ip.66.212.210.122) has joined #pandaboard

  824. [20:39:38] <tmax> ok thanks jayabharath i will look it later
  825. [20:39:53] <LetoThe2nd> tmax: so if you don't know the $SOMETHING, just open the terminal, type arm- and then hit tab twice fast.
  826. [20:40:21] <tmax> ok let me try it i dont know almost anything of commands :P
  827. [20:40:32] <jayabharath> tmax: I would serious suggest understanding how to setup toolchain and build for command line first before relying on any of the IDEs ..
  828. [20:40:33] <LetoThe2nd> tmax: then from all displayed things, pick the one that ends with gcc (its the compiler), add your file, and done.
  829. [20:41:00] <LetoThe2nd> tmax: and be prepared for it to faile, because .c means plain c, not c++, by the way.
  830. [20:41:01] <luke_> can the pandaboard boot of usb? and can i use unetboot to load the device?? or does it have to be done manually?
  831. [20:41:25] <tmax> jayabharath: yeah i am going to do that
  832. [20:41:32] <LetoThe2nd> luke_: it can not out of the box, you need an sd card.
  833. [20:42:03] <luke_> okay so it will only boot from SD thats fine
  834. [20:42:25] <luke_> can i use a 16gb usb stick for added storage?
  835. [20:42:34] <LetoThe2nd> luke_: yes
  836. [20:42:37] <tmax> LetoThe2nd: i typed arm- and do nothing it says that "arm" order was not found
  837. [20:42:59] <LetoThe2nd> tmax: then the chain is not installed
  838. [20:43:23] <tmax> do you have any email where i can send you screenshots ?
  839. [20:43:31] <jayabharath> luke_: You may want to check into 2 things 1) http://rsalveti.wordpress.com/2011/07/11/net-booting-with-tftp-and-pxe-with-pandaboard/ 2) https://github.com/swetland/omap4boot
  840. [20:43:39] <LetoThe2nd> tmax: you know, its really annoying for someone who tries to help you when he sees you again after some hours and you obviously ignored just about every thing one wanted to tell you.
  841. [20:43:52] <LetoThe2nd> tmax: use a public imagehost.
  842. [20:44:20] <rsalveti> luke_: ping jcrigby at #linaro, he enabled u-boot usb spl with our latest linaro release
  843. [20:44:44] <luke_> awesome i was looking at linaro earlier
  844. [20:44:54] <rsalveti> then you can boot directly from your musb, and boot the image from tftp, pxe or similar
  845. [20:44:55] <tmax> LetoThe2nd: nono i didnt ignore it, i was trying to install the toolchain, but i couldnt do it, so i was trying to find a HOW TO for my IDE and i couldnt find it, so i come back
  846. [20:46:01] <LetoThe2nd> tmax: or put the other way round - you did the first step, and as it already failed you just ignored everything else, turned 180 degress and tried another thing, where also first step already failed and so on.
  847. [20:46:32] <LetoThe2nd> tmax: so again, as i told you literally hours ago. just install the toolchains from the ubuntu repos. they're there.
  848. [20:46:52] <tmax> LetoThe2nd: Ok, i apologise, now i will do every word you say, if it doesnt work, i ask again :)
  849. [20:46:58] <tmax> LetoThe2nd: Sorry you are completely right
  850. [20:47:06] <luke_> has any one got linux mint to boot of panda baorad yet?
  851. [20:47:24] <LetoThe2nd> 17:47 < LetoThe2nd> tmax: gcc-arm-linux-gnueabi or gcc-arm-linux-gnueabihf, depending on your likes.
  852. [20:47:51] <tmax> jaya: i looked at that pages before, arent them bootloaders ?
  853. [20:48:05] <jstashluk> tmax: did you follow the 'Getting Started Guide'?
  854. [20:48:18] <LetoThe2nd> tmax: so please, install one now - probably gcc-arm-linux-gnueabi will fit, and if you want c++ also, then add g++-arm-linux-gnueabi
  855. [20:48:42] <tmax> LetoThe2nd: ok whats the difference of having hard float
  856. [20:49:00] <_av500_> 5% if you are lucky
  857. [20:49:20] <LetoThe2nd> tmax: the difference is that then your compiled binary uses the hardware float mechanisms. forget it for now.
  858. [20:49:22] <tmax> jstashluk: Yeah, i have Ubuntu running on the PandaBoard but thats not my problem
  859. [20:49:31] <_av500_> LetoThe2nd: wrong

  861. [20:49:53] <tmax> so ?
  862. [20:50:01] <LetoThe2nd> _av500_: ah yes. sry for misinformation then
  863. [20:50:10] <tmax> hard float is faster i suppose because it uses hardware module
  864. [20:50:17] <LetoThe2nd> tmax: ignore the hardfloat anyway for now, please.
  865. [20:50:23] <tmax> LetoThe2nd: Ok :)
  866. [20:50:46] <_av500_> tmax: no

  871. [20:51:56] <DaveDavenport> realy.. hmm
  872. [20:52:07] <DaveDavenport> if you do not have hw float?
  873. [20:52:17] <LetoThe2nd> _av500_: ah yes, thought anything prior hf would still use nwfpe
  874. [20:52:30] <_av500_> DaveDavenport: then you dont have a panda
  875. [20:52:43] <tmax> ok its a mess but i want to learn :P
  876. [20:53:01] <tmax> so there are dedicated register to float variables ?
  877. [20:53:14] <tmax> in OMAP4 in this case
  878. [20:53:15] <_av500_> comparing sf vs hf on hardware that does not have float vs hw that has is useless
  879. [20:53:29] <LetoThe2nd> tmax: ignore all that, please! at least until you can write you own makefiles ;)
